Join us for this unique course that guides you through the process of teaching yoga to survivors of any type of cancer. Using the Pancha Maya model, we learn to skillfully and confidently work with students on a physical level, and also to address the energetic, mental, emotional, and spiritual components of a cancer diagnosis. Course leader is Laura Kupperman, Professional Yoga Therapist, Career Coach, and cancer survivor.

Laura KuppermanLaura has been practicing yoga since 1995, teaching since 2002, and working with cancer survivors since 2005. After her own cancer diagnosis in 2003, Laura experienced the profound impact that yoga had on healing and recovery, and it became her dream to share that opportunity with others. Following more than 1,000 hours and 2.5 years of study to become a Professional Yoga Therapist, Laura began teaching yoga to survivors at HealthLinks Clinic in Boulder. Laura also established Yoga for Survivors™ classes at Longmont United Hospital, Tebo Cancer Center at Boulder Community Hospital and various yoga studios in Boulder. In addition to her yoga therapy certification Laura has completed many other trainings and workshops. She is especially influenced by what she’s learned from Scott Blossom, Joseph and Lilian Le Page, Rod Stryker, Sonia Sumar, and Paul Grilley.
In addition to teaching yoga, Laura has been a Life & Career Coach since 1999. She is a graduate of Coach U, the world’s oldest and largest coach training organization. She is well-versed in the areas of career development, career changing, and new business start-ups. Many of her clients are in creative and wellness related fields, and she enjoys coaching other professionals who want to build their business and increase their impact in their community.

Barbara Mahler, LAcBarbara A. Mahler, LAc has been practicing Traditional Oriental Medicine since graduating from Emperor’s College of Traditional Oriental Medicine in 1987. Though she has a general practice, she focuses on supporting people with cancer during surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Barbara has helped hundreds of cancer patients regain their strength and quality of life using a combination of acupuncture, herbs, nutrition, and lifestyle counseling.
Mary TaylorMary Taylor began studying yoga in 1971 while earning a degree in psychology and continued to study and practice while apprenticing in the culinary field. It was not until the early 80’s, when she moved to Boulder and started studying yoga with Richard, that yoga became a central thread in her life. Seeing the overlay of yoga with her interests in food, psychology and wellness, in 1988 she traveled to India to shed light on yoga's effect on other aspects of life as she studied with K. Pattabhi Jois. Mary has authored three cookbooks and co-authored a book which explores yoga, meditation and finding one’s personal dharma as a means of bring lasting meaning and happiness. (“What Are You Hungry For? Women, Food and Spirituality.”) As the Yoga Workshop’s director, Mary has attended all of Richard’s teacher trainings, and feels she’s just beginning to understand the subject at hand. She brings to her teaching a deep respect for the healing and calming effects of yoga. Her classes are engaging and fun, focusing on the flow of breath, steady movement and the feeling of completeness that can be cultivated through a lasting practice.
Monica Schlatter, RN, MSN, ND, AOCNPMonica Schlatter practices at Rocky Mountain Cancer Center's Midtown Denver location. Monica focuses on bone marrow transplant. She enjoys the challenge involved in caring for this interesting and complicated group of patients as well as the close relationship that is necessary to in order to properly manage the physical, psychosocial, and emotional aspects of transplant. Monica received her undergraduate degree in biology in from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She then earned her clinical doctorate in nursing in 1994 from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. To specialize in oncology, she returned to UCHSC and received her masters in nursing in 1999 and a post-masters certificate in 2002.
Trudy Turvey, MSPT, Clinical Director, HealthLinks Clinic, BoulderMs. Turvey has been a practicing physical therapist in the arena of rehabilitation for over 30 years. She founded and has directed HealthLinks Clinic for 10 years, which specializes in oncology rehabilitative services. She has also overseen the implementation of educational services in other areas, including cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. Her ongoing personal education efforts emphasize chronic disease management, understanding that it is not only physical well-being that is important, but also how significantly education, nutritional and psychosocial aspects of health impact her patients. Her goal is to develop a model for cancer care that recognizes the ongoing need for supportive services in cancer survivorship.

Dr. Hartley attended University of Virginia for his undergraduate degree, and Emory University for his medical degree. He completed general and plastic surgery training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, one of the premier programs in the U.S. Dr. Hartley was a fellow in Aesthetic Surgery in Melbourne, Australia, and in Aesthetic and Reconstructive Breast Surgery in Nashville, TN. During his time there, he co-authored the Breast Augmentation chapter for the definitive plastic surgery textbook.
Dr. Hartley has a special interest in breast cancer reconstruction. His mother is a 20-year breast cancer survivor, and he lost his mother-in-law to metastatic breast cancer shortly after his marriage. He now devotes approximately half of his clinical practice to breast cancer patients, and often offers his services pro bono for those patients without insurance.
Richard will also be making a special appearance during the intensive!
This part of the course includes: lecture, group discussions, small group/partner activities, yoga practice, teaching practice, panel discussion, guest speakers, and individual time for reflection and integration. By the end of the 45-hour Intensive you will have created your own class sequence for cancer survivors and practiced teaching it to others.

The intention of this course is to provide yoga in communities all over the world for people who have been diagnosed with cancer. Toward that end we are seeking teachers who are eager to go into the world and begin applying what they’ve learned. The internship will help you gain the hands-on experience you need to build competency working with survivors. It is your opportunity to serve your community in a very profound and rewarding way. You will be guided, supported, and mentored by Laura throughout the internship in both the yoga and business aspects of this endeavor. Laura is also a Life & Career Coach and has significant experience helping independent professionals and small business owners grow their business. You will have up to one year, following the end of the intensive, to finish your internship.

The $1,400 fee for this course includes:
Full tuition is due by July 1st. $1400 pricing is only available until July 1st. If you choose to pay for the Six-Day Intensive individually, $750 will be due by July 1st. The internship fee of $850 will be due before you begin your internship. Regardless of which payment plan you choose, you must still complete both course components within one year in order to receive your certification.

$200 deposit is required to hold your space in the intensive. The deposit will be applied to your total tuition. Official registration is confirmed upon receipt of full tuition. Full tuition is due July 1, 2010.
Space is limited, pre-registration is required, early registration is encouraged. The $200 deposit is non-refundable.
Refunds are available up to 30 days (June 15, 2010) before the intensive begins, minus the $200 deposit. After this time, no refunds or credits will be given should you decide not to attend.
The Yoga Workshop reserves the right to cancel the intensive due to low enrollment. Full refunds will be issued in this case.
