rediscover the depth and beauty of this unique contemplative form
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a contemplative practice designed to draw awareness deep into the body, so we can feel the subtle forces that shape our experience, and begin to relate to them with closeness and authenticity. The practice begins with an organic sequence of breath and movement that naturally deepens and expands to encompass an extensive repertoire of postural forms. The exploration of these forms encourages an endless refinement of somatic awareness, and the cultivation of this awareness is what gives the practice such phenomenal depth and potency.
As we confront the rigors of the Ashtanga sequencing, we can easily lose the thread. Our ambitions can interfere, and our distorting ideas about the nature of the practice can prevent us from having a fuller and more intimate experience. To stay on the path, we have to keep returning to foundational ideas about what we are doing, and renewing our sense of how the method works, so we can continue to uncover the beauty and intelligence of the yoga itself.
This intensive is an opportunity to explore the brilliance of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. It introduces the philosophy of embodiment that underlies the practice, and invites us to connect with the foundational techniques that bring the practice alive—tracing internal currents of breath, balancing subtle patterns of sensation, moving the body from the inside out, and making space within ourselves for spontaneous psychical release.
With an intimate relationship to the foundations, we can avail ourselves of the rich transformative potential of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, without having to possess supernatural suppleness or physical prowess. Instead, we can use the movements and postures that are readily available to us to do something more remarkable—to draw awareness into the empty center of our being, into the silence beyond thought, where we can feel the primitive pulse of life itself, moving through the expanse of our consciousness.
This intensive is designed for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike. There are no requirements of technical proficiency, and people with physical limitations are welcome. The only intelligent approach to yoga is the one that begins now, in the present moment, with things being precisely as they are. This approach will guide us throughout this intensive. So if the thought of learning (or relearning) the Ashtanga method calls to you, please don’t hesitate. You are absolutely welcome to join.
