The Second Series of the Ashtanga system is called Nadi Shodana, “the cleansing of the little rivers.” The little rivers are the subtle channels through which the creative currents of prana can flow. The practice is designed to remove obstacles from those channels, so that prana can circulate more openly through our being, allowing us to experience ourselves, and the world around us, with higher fidelity. The obstacles in question are the sediment of past experience, fragments of memory that were never fully assimilated. These fragments form blisters in our subconscious minds that limit our experience. The practice of the Second Series is designed to dislodge these fragments and release them into the open space of our awareness, where they can dissolve back into the emptiness from which they arose. Through this process, we become more supple, more receptive, more imaginative, more forgiving and more aware. We temper ourselves for the downpour of true compassion, the downpour of grace that opens us to the sublime nature of reality.
In this 5-day intensive, we explore the rhythm and flow of the Second Series, exploring not only the postures, but the dynamic sequences of breath, movement and awareness to which they belong. We observe the traditional Sanskrit count for the series, but more importantly, we learn to adapt the series to our unique bodies and circumstances, so we can practice the series intelligently, and avail ourselves of its tremendous potency, without harming ourselves in the process.
February 25 – March 1 | 2019
8:00 AM – 10:00 AM: Asana
10:30 AM – 11:30 AM: Pranayama and Visualization
1:00 PM – 3:30 PM: Alignment
The program will involve guided morning asana sessions, focusing on the postures of the Second Series, followed by pranayama and subtle body visualization. Each afternoon, we workshop a different sequence from the Second Series, exploring strategies for overcoming obstacles, looking closely at the movement patterns that connect the forms, and rediscovering the internal alignment that brings the postures alive.
This intensive is designed to support Second Series practitioners of all kinds, from those who are just learning, to those who have been refining the sequence for years. You are not required to have any special proficiency in the Second Series in order to attend. However, you are expected to be grounded in the First Series. This means that you have practiced the First Series steadily for some reasonable amount of time, and you have absorbed the stabilizing effects of the series into your body and mind. You might not be able to perform every posture with exemplary alignment, but you are stable enough to undergo the stimulation of the next sequence. People with physical injuries and other limitations who meet these requirements are absolutely welcome to attend.
Tuition for this intensive is $600. A deposit of $100 is required at the time of registration to reserve your place at the intensive. The deposit is automatically applied to your tuition, and the remaining balance of $500 is due by January 28. Refunds will be issued upon request, minus $50 for administrative costs, until January 28. No refunds will be issued after that time. If you have any questions, please email our administrator, Kelly Landrum, using the icon below.
