Into the Depths

an immersion like no other

begins Nov 2, 2024

The Yoga of Reflection

This course is a sacred inquiry into the depths of the soul. The intention is to uncover the truth of yoga, not as told by this or that tradition, but as revealed to the open heart. The truth of yoga is already inside of you, and your task is simply to unearth it and bring it to light.

To undertake this process, you must become a light to yourself. You must forgo reliance on external voices and listen to the wisdom of your heart. Only then can you know yourself in the truest sense, through your unique relationship to the source. And this is what yoga is all about.

To know yourself, in the relevant sense, is to sustain an immediate awareness of the creative power that is unfolding uniquely within you, and manifesting as your own living, breathing reality. The purpose of yoga practice is to develop this awareness, and to nurture your relationship with the creative power that comes forth.

Somatic practices like asana, pranayama and meditation are powerful supports, but only when woven into the more fundamental practice of self-reflection, the practice of sifting through the sands of your mind, uncovering your delusions, dissolving them in a loving awareness, and allowing new insight to arise.

To teach this practice is the purpose of the present course. The aim is not to realize this or that spiritual principle, but to enhance your power of reflection, so you can awaken your own wild intelligence, and allow it to blossom into your life.

TESTIMONIALS

a note from your guide...

Here it comes, the fourth iteration of Into the Depths, my extended immersion into the yogic process of philosophical reflection. This course is not about learning philosophy, but practicing it, and doing so in the original sense, where the point of philosophical reflection is to care for the soul.

So it was for the Indian gnostics who developed the practices of yoga. They were philosophers fundamentally, and they developed yogic practice in support. The point of their philosophy was to penetrate through the various levels of mind to the absolute ground of being. Not to escape the world, but to rediscover it, by seeing it bathed in the eternal light.

Our purpose is to honor their discovery, not by retracing their footsteps, or clinging anxiously to their ideas, but blazing our own path to the center of our being, so we can touch the radiance directly, and allow it to pour into our bodies. And for this we practice philosophy. We practice to make our minds sensitive and clear, so they can hold higher truths.

There are no requisites here, no exams, no accreditations, but something finer and more profound—an invitation to dive deep into the inner yoga with an amazing community of sincere seekers from around the world, who are ready to embrace the confusion, the heartache, and also the sublime wonder of exploring the path of insight. If this pulls on the strings of your heart, you are absolutely welcome to join.

Last year, I gave a series of three philosophical talks designed to prime you for the course, and answer any questions that you might have about its content and organization. I will be giving three more such talks this August 2024. Dates TBA. Like last year, the recorded talks will be posted below. Hope you find them enriching.

warmly,
Ty

The course comprises a total of 30 live sessions, during which we sustain an extended conversation about the spiritual process of hearing and engaging the deepest longings of our hearts, particularly the longings to know ourselves, to know the creative forces that shape us from within, and to move graciously with those forces into a meaningful life.

The point of our conversation is to support this process. And like the process itself, the conversation must unfold spontaneously, so we can learn from the obstacles and insights that emerge along the way. Using a carefully curated selection of readings, we contemplate the nature of divinity, meditation, consciousness, embodiment, liberation, suffering, sorrow, yearning, trust, surrender and love.

These contemplations allow us to pose crucial questions to ourselves, questions that can have an unexpected potency. We allow these questions to sink into us, and we listen closely for the soul to respond. We celebrate the moment when the soul begins to speak, and to show us how to move forward.

Indeed, the course does not follow the dictates of any particular tradition, nor does it assume any particular theological stance. Instead, it draws insights from the comparative study of several spiritual traditions (Yoga, Buddhism, Daoism and Christianity) and looks for truth beyond ideological distinctions.

The course offers a welcome refuge to those who would set down dogma and the burden of belief to follow the true path of yoga as reflection on what is.

The course involves a balance of weekly live talks, guided meditations, short assigned readings, reflective journal prompts and peer discussion groups. There are no exams or other pressures, and you can adjust your level of engagement as needed. The course material remains posted all year long. And the community is there to inspire and support you when you need it most.
